Guys. Guys. Guys. Marvel and ABC have officially confirmed that not only is Agent Carter getting a pickup for the fall, they're skipping the pilot and going straight to series. Hayley Atwell will be back as Agent Peggy Carter herself, Dominic Cooper will reprise his role as Howard Stark, and the screenwriters behind Captain America: The First Avenger are set to executive produce and do some writing.
Also, the showrunners will be a female writing team: Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, who previously created and ran Reapers (a cult-show, but very fun). So, all of this is pretty much wonderful.
I mean, it's wonderful because Agent Carter is a fantastic property, and it's also wonderful because this is a show that explicitly deals with sexism, feminism, a woman's right to work, intelligence agencies, and just plain old spy movie fun, with an incredibly talented cast and crew, and just...I'm very happy. I am very very happy.
For those of you who have read this so far and been a bit confused, Peggy Carter (Atwell) is Steve Rogers' love interest in the first Captain America, and makes an appearance in the second. She was one of the founding members of SHIELD and a pioneer for women in government. She appeared as well in the Agent Carter short that was bonus content on the Iron Man 3 DVD.
So, now that you're all up to speed, please feel free to freak the hell out like the rest of us.
It's a female lead period espionage show tangentially related to superheroes, about a hyper-competent spy lady running the world, starting something huge and world-altering, and in the process trying to get over her lost love. How is this not your favorite thing already?
Oh. And Agents of SHIELD has been confirmed for a second season. Which is good. It really picks up in the later episodes, and if you gave up on the show because it started out crappy, I both understand your feelings, and suggest you give it another try. Seriously. It's been pretty rad lately.
